Artist's Comments

mei mei dances beautifully, with her hands, her eyes, her body and her feet.
metal bells wrapped round and round each ankle jingle as she steps, skips, pounds her foot on the floor, creating a beautiful sound that chimes so perfectly well along with the rhythms of music.
these are her feet. this is where she dances.

in a span of eight hours, i took over a hundred pictures of mei mei two years ago. i've never gotten around to finish submitting them and at last count had around 40 that was left to submit. after undergoing an un-forced period of absence from DA (i didn't do it on purpose, believe me!), i have decided to streamline the images i submit and select only the shots that really stand out and mean something to me. they don't subscribe to anyone's standard but my own and i'm fine with that whatever the response might be. plus, i've decided to have a photo album-like website which will act more as a photo-journal than portfolio, and that's where all the other images i like, but don't think are particularly great, will find a home. but please don't hold your breath for this website, cos i'm definitely not holding mine! it'll appear when it appears ;)

this is one of my favourite images from the mei mei collection. the feet often get the most pounding when it comes to dancing, as well as the least attention. while most types of dancing cover up the feet with shoes, indian dance have feet exposed and use them not only as part of the choreography, but also as an instrument. the bells the dancers wear are heavy, and they often stamp their feet on the floor to create additional noise and to emphasize certain sounds, movements and moments.

i haven't seen mei mei in almost a year. the girl has been so busy dancing and i am happy for her as this is her dream she is living out. she leaves for europe soon to perform, and all i can say is, her feet has taken her places! this one's for you!
